Free Period

Have you heard the term ‘Period Poverty’? It refers to the inability to access menstrual products, which impacts the health and dignity of menstruators, especially vulnerable people and youth. Not having access to period products can impact Calgarians in the classroom, workplace and everyday life.

The Free. Period. initiative provides free pads and tampons to anyone who needs them by making them available in Library washrooms—with no stigma or judgment. Menstrual product dispensers are now installed at Central, Forest Lawn, Saddletowne, Judith Umbach and Louise Riley libraries. With donor support, we can expand to all Calgary Public Library locations.

Here is how your gift can help:

  • $31.50 fills a dispenser with one day’s worth of period products. The Library’s Free. Period. initiative provides free pads and tampons to anyone who needs them.
  • $220.50 fills a dispenser with one week’s worth of period products. In close proximity to schools, workplaces, community centres and shelters, libraries are accessible across the city and welcoming to all.
  • $2,500 supports the installation, supplies, and management of one Free. Period. dispenser for one year.
