The Simmons-Harvie Community Living Room on Level Four of the Central Library was named by Britt Simmons and Janet Harvie.
For Britt, books have the power to shape lives. Reading tales of Egypt and excavations of ancient tombs made him consider being an archaeologist, but he was later captivated by medicine after reading about Dr. Christiaan Barnard and the brothers Mayo.
As young parents, Janet and Britt piled onto the bed and read with their boys every night. As a result of this ritual, they all still enjoy the pleasures of reading and shared memories of those stories read together.
“A library is a place that maintains its importance through all stages of life—from play groups for new moms, to seniors maintaining an active mind,” says Britt Simmons. “Janet and I believe that libraries are crucial assets for a healthy community. They help foster creativity, curiosity and a life-long love of learning. We are proud to support the New Central Library.”
