With more than 800,000 members and 22 locations, Calgary Public Library is the most-used public resource in the city. Every year, more and more Calgarians sign up for Library cards, check out books, use spaces, take part in free programs, and find the tools that help them achieve their goals and live vibrant, fulfilling lives.
As our community grows, the Library must grow alongside it to ensure everyone can access the Library resources they need to succeed. The last time a new full-service Library location opened in Calgary was in 2019 with Seton Library. By 2030, Calgary Public Library will open new locations in Belmont, Walden, Symons Valley, and Skyview. Belmont Library is currently under construction ahead of a scheduled opening in early 2027, and ground will break on Walden Library this fall.
As a donor, you can help these new Library locations open with the amenities, features, and resources Calgarians depend on. Major gift and naming opportunities for these upcoming Library locations are also available — contact Tamara Smith, Director of Development, for more information.
Bookshelf and book case sponsorships are available for new Library locations. Select your preferred Library location and collections area (either fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, or teen books) and a plaque recognizing your sponsorship will be installed on a bookshelf—or a full bookcase—for a ten-year term.
Plaques can bear your name, honour or memorialize a friend or loved one, or recognize a business, service club, book club, or community organization. Plaques will not be installed until after a new Library location is open to the public. Questions? View the shelf sponsorship FAQ here.
Located on the west side of Macleod Trail just south of 194 Avenue, Belmont Library is anticipated to open in 2027. It will serve the expanding Belmont community through programming, services, collections, and spaces. This Library location is one component of a multi-use site that includes a 106,000-square-foot City of Calgary fieldhouse.
Anticipated to open in 2028, Symons Valley Library will provide this growing neighbourhood in northwest Calgary with programming, services, collections, and welcoming spaces. This Library location is one component of an integrated civic facility plan for the area. In addition to a 20,000-square-foot Library location, the facility will also include affordable housing, commercial space, and a transit hub upon its completion.
Scheduled to open in 2027, Walden Library will provide the growing Walden community with programming, services, collections, and welcoming spaces. This Library location will be a major component of a multi-service, mixed-use public facility that will also include the permanent home of Calgary Fire Deparment’s Walden Fire Station.
A Library location is planned for the Skyview Ranch neighbourhood in Calgary’s northeast. Currently, Skyview Library is anticipated to open in 2030.
