The first day of kindergarten is an important milestone, and it’s crucial that children are prepared for the transition from home to school. Kindergarten learning builds the foundation for fundamental lifelong learning and skill development.

Calgary Public Library’s Kindergarten Book Bag initiative equips parents and caregivers with a variety of free resources that help children adjust to the new experiences that await them as they start school. Kindergarten Book Bags are available at no cost to Library members. They contain storybooks that celebrate kindergarten, activities to generate excitement around starting school, a brochure with information on registering for kindergarten and preparing children for their first day.

In partnership with local school districts, the Library also prepares specialized Kindergarten Book Bags for distribution at schools with large numbers of students from low-income families. These bags also contain basic school supplies and resources to foster skill development and creative engagement, like modeling clay for open-ended play, and a magnifying glass for observation and discovery.

As a donor, you can help to ensure that children and families in Calgary are supported as they enter kindergarten by helping provide a positive start to the school experience while positioning the Library as a trusted resource. Here are two ways your donation can make a difference:

  • $20 covers the cost of one Kindergarten Book Bag. Help send children off to school ready to take on this new chapter.
  • $500 covers the cost of one Library Goes to Kindergarten event. Your gift helps connect families with Library resources and each other, supporting the school journey.
