Support the Library's Indigenous services and resources

Calgary Public Library is committed to listening to, learning from, and building relationships with local Indigenous communities in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation. Through numerous initiatives, the Library is working to increase community awareness and understanding of Indigenous ways of being, knowing, and doing, as well as the impacts of colonization.

A series of programs, events, and activities are held at Library locations throughout the city to recognize and honour First Nations, Métis, and Inuit culture, history, and language. Annual events commemorate National Indigenous History Month in June, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September, while a variety of other events are offered year-round. Programming is developed in collaboration with community partners to ensure that activations are relevant, culturally-sensitive, and impactful.

At the Elders’ Guidance Circle, individuals, small groups, and students can meet with Elders to explore topics relating to culture, history, and Reconciliation. through appointments and drop-in sessions. The Indigenous Languages Resource Centre provides a space to meet with Elders, share stories under a night sky LED-light installation, learn about traditional items, and learn Treaty 7 languages. Indigenous Placemaking installations are created by Indigenous artists to beautify and decolonize Library spaces.  The virtual Caretakers of the Land program offers opportunities for elementary school students to learn from Elders, Knowledge-keepers, authors, illustrators, performers, and Library staff about the diverse perspectives and ways of knowing of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people living in Alberta.

As a donor, your generosity can support the Library’s Indigenous services and resources in the way that is most meaningful to you. Here are two ways the Library can use your gift:

• $350 can cover online or in-person session of the Elders’ Guidance Circle. Connecting with Elders and traditional knowledge keepers helps us learn about the importance of our shared histories.
• $250 supports one storytime program with a Treaty 7 Author, providing opportunities to engage with stories, writers, and artists who share a variety of different perspectives.
