Normally, walking around and reading a book are two activities that can’t really be done simultaneously. But thanks to generous support from Sticks & Strings Foundation, your next great read might be just a short walk away. This month, Calgary Public Library launched self-guided StoryWalks ® in neighbourhoods throughout the city. On a StoryWalk, you can read through a whole storybook with your family as you walk through a park or follow a public path. Signs placed along the path show each page of a book from cover to cover, and include a QR code that links you to the full collection of StoryWalk titles on the Library’s website to encourage further exploration.

StoryWalks share items from the Library’s collection and highlight Canadian authors and publishers. It’s a great way to get your mind and body active and promote literacy in all forms. As an added bonus, participants in this year’s Ultimate Summer Challenge can complete a special StoryWalk activity in Beanstack for more summer reading fun. (Register for Ultimate Summer Challenge 2025 at calgarylibrary.ca/events-and-programs/ultimate-summer-challenge/.)

Weather permitting, the StoryWalks will be available through October in the following locations:

  • Skyview Ranch Community Playground (117 Skyview Ranch Blvd NE)
  • Nolancrest Castle Playground (241 Nolancrest Heights NW)
  • Walden Grove Playground (Walgrove Blvd and Walgrove Gardens SE)
  • Belmont Mounds of Fun Playground (483 Belmont Heath SW)
  • Yorkville Central Park (121 Yorkville Park SW)
  • Somerset Bridlewood Community Garden (100 Somervale Dr SW)
  • Central Library (800 3rd St SE)
