Calgary, AB — A $1 million gift from TD Bank Group to the Calgary Public Library has the power to help transform both the Library and generations of readers.

Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group, made the announcement at the city’s Central Library with Mayor Naheed Nenshi in attendance. The transformative gift will support the creation of the TD Great Reading Room at New Central Library and the TD Family Program Room at Fish Creek Library.

“At TD we believe that public libraries are vital community-building institutions and an important part of any town or city,” said McKenna. “One of the best ways we can help make a difference in our communities is by making an investment in reading and overall literacy which is why we are pleased to offer this gift to the Calgary Public Library.”

The TD Great Reading Room at New Central Library, slated to open 2018, will be a classic space designed with readers in mind. The iconic room, a space that will inspire the hearts and minds of all who visit, will be akin to the historic reading rooms of other great libraries throughout the world.

The TD Family Program Room will provide space for patrons of all ages who participate in programs offered at Fish Creek, Calgary’s largest community library. Part of the Early Learning Centre, the TD Family Program Room will inspire discovery, promote learning, and foster community interaction.

“As a long-time supporter of libraries and literacy across Canada, TD has given a gift that will support the transformation of the Calgary Public Library today and the lives of generations of Calgary’s readers long into the future,” shared Bill Ptacek, CEO, Calgary Public Library. “TD’s gift builds on our shared commitment to literacy and a life-long love of learning. Calgary Public Library patrons already benefit from TD’s support of the highly successfully TD Summer Reading Club and the TD Read With Me program.”

TD is a Founding Partner for Add In, the Campaign for Calgary’s Library, a bold, audacious vision to take a great library system and transform it into the best in the world for Calgarians. The city-wide campaign will build capacity for each and every community library and will include projects with a strong impact for Library customers.
